Lowell was one of the first Houses built in the realization of President Lowell's long-held dream of providing on-campus accommodations for every Harvard College student throughout his career at the college. Classicist Zeph Stewart was the third Master, and William and Mary Lee Bossert served from 1975 to 1998. The Lovell House was designed for the active, health conscious Lovell family in the hills of Los Angeles. The house is an early example of the International Style in the United States that evokes principles that were developed by Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright. The boxy, modernist side of Quincy House, right, was added in 1958; while Stone Hall, previously called Old Quincy, dates back to 1930, and was part of the building boom under President Lowell. On a tour of the House, Merle Bicknell, assistant dean of physical resources for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, emphasized the importance of maintaining Lowell’s historic elements while pushing it into the twenty-first century. She pointed out a long sloping ramp, camouflaged by a brick façade, that adds much-needed accessibility to the House entrance without changing the look of the courtyard. Perched over a canyon in the Hollywood Hills, a terrace moves from the street into a topfloor entry hall, which leads to an informal family room and bedrooms. Of all Harvard’s undergraduate Houses, no building brings the outdoors inside like Currier. “The tree house” is all about the landscape where alternate sloping and sunken hillsides are organic, serene, and tree-filled. In the common room called “the fishbowl” there are oversized windows that face the slopes. On a winter day this space transforms to feel more like a snow globe than a fishbowl. Language tables and special-interest tables are common features of everyday lunches and dinners. Many House events are organized by Lowell's "House Committee" of elected undergraduates from within the House.
