In what appears to be an effort to make her presence known, she will sometimes frequent the restaurant area, where she behaves rather rudely to the eatery’s staff. She has even been physical with them, as one waitress claims to have pulled from behind by her apron strings, nearly causing her to fall backward. She is described as being an older gal who is dressed in 19th century clothing and is most often seen roaming about between the hallways, tavern, and kitchen. Here, she has been spotted looking over products on the shelves, as if deciding what she’ll fix for dinner.

Like the dried blood of dead Confederate sharpshooters that still stain the attic’s wood floorboards, the ghosts who haunt its confines refuse to fade away. A very eerie account to say the least, and what is most certainly attributed to the ghostly midwife, guests who stay at the inn have experienced the sensation of being tucked into bed once under the covers. Guests staying at the Farnsworth House have reported an assortment of eerie phenomena. Others have recounted being scared out of their wits seeing the silhouettes of human forms standing next to or sitting on the edge of their bed in the darkness. A female apparition is often seen sitting alone in the dining room, often mistaken as a fellow guest before she suddenly fades away before everyone’s startled eyes. Since its completion in 1951, the Edith Farnsworth house has been meticulously maintained and restored. The most important restoration took place in 1972, when then owner Peter Palumbo hired the firm of Mies van der Rohe’s grandson, Dirk Lohan, to restore the house to its original 1951 appearance. A second restoration took place in 1996, after a devastating flood damaged the interior.
One of the sharpshooters missed his target, and his bullet pierced the wall at the home of the innocent civilian Jennie Wade. There is, however, an alternate theory that may prove more accurate which has the sharpshooters using the Welty House as their headquarters. This theory states that because the Welty House was farther up the street at a higher elevation, it is more likely this is where the “magic bullet” came from.
It is from this practice that many such places acquired their tales of hauntings over the years. Unfortunate as it was, these make-shift wards saw countless deaths and injuries to soldiers who were often treated by civilians. After his passing, the Bank of Gettysburg took ownership of the home. From there, it would pass on to several owners until finally being sold in 1972 to the Shultz family, who maintain ownership to this day. It is the Shultz family who first reported that paranormal entities inhabit the residence.

The architecture of the house represents the ultimate refinement of Mies van der Rohe’s minimalist expression of structure and space. It is composed of three strong, horizontal steel forms – the terrace, the floor of the house, and the roof – attached to attenuated, steel flange columns. In many ways also, Mies van der Rohe was able to realize spatial and structural ideals that were impossible in larger projects, such as the Seagram Building. For example, the I-beams of the Edith Farnsworth House are both structural and expressive, whereas in the Seagram Building they are attached to exterior as symbols for what is necessarily invisible behind fireproof cladding. In addition, the one-story Edith Farnsworth house with its isolated site allowed a degree of transparency and simplicity impossible in the larger, more urban projects.
